Inagural winner of ''Music for All' award announced

The Welsh Association of Male Choirs are proud to announce that the very first recipients of our 'Music for All' Award is Ysgol Y Deri in Penarth.

The Association intends to make several small financial awards each year to recognise those that have made notable efforts to bring music alive in our communities often in the face of cultural, social, economic, and other barriers.

The Association's 100 member choirs will be invited to put forward their nominations and we hope to bring some joy, recognition, and a small practical boost to communities within Wales and beyond.

The Award will be presented by the Association's Chairman Paul Reynolds at the school's Open Day on the morning of Wednesday 12th June.

“For those that followed the excellent television documentaries on Ysgol Y Deri, you'll be only too familiar with the innovative ways music has been introduced into the lives of pupils with additional or alternative learning needs”, said Mr Reynolds.

“The purchasing and maintenance cost of instruments and adaptive technology for musical engagement proves to be a constant challenge for our schools and communities”.

The member choir who nominated Ysgol Y Deri, the Aber Valley Male Voice Choir will also take an active part in the Open Day. The Choir has conducted workshops with children of all ages at the school over the past two years

According to their Musical Director, Geraint Evans, “The way in which the children interacted with us has been transformative for our choir, and we understand that the experience has left a lasting impression on the children. The youngsters sang alongside the choir, accompanied us through the use of innovative technology, clapped, swayed, waved flags, and even came alongside me to conduct the choir”.

Ysgol Y Deri has its own choirs and band and dedicated music therapy staff. During the Open Day, there will be performances from choirs that communicate through sign language and Makaton.
